The Assist Kings: Football's Great Scoring Partnerships

Behind every great goalscorer is usually one teammate who keeps finding them. Across the six leagues in Club2Club's database, a handful of partnerships stand out for how often one player has teed up another for a goal.

The most one-sided of them belongs to Bayern Munich. Thomas Müller has set up 49 goals for Robert Lewandowski, a partnership that helped carry Bayern through nearly a decade of Bundesliga dominance and a continental treble in 2020. Few pairings anywhere in Europe have combined for that kind of output over a single stretch at one club.

Barcelona's front line during the "MSN" years produced something rarer: a genuine two-way partnership. Luis Suárez has assisted 39 goals for Lionel Messi, while Messi has returned the favor with 33 for Suárez — the two trading the final pass back and forth for the better part of six seasons, with Neymar completing a front three that terrorized La Liga defenses.

Tottenham's Harry Kane and Heung-min Son managed something almost perfectly symmetrical: 24 assists from Son to Kane, and 24 the other way. Few strike partnerships anywhere reflect that level of mutual understanding, built over years of playing off each other's runs in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, the numbers tend to run one direction. David Silva laid on 21 goals for Sergio Agüero during Manchester City's rise to the top of English football, and at Real Madrid, Karim Benzema created 21 for Cristiano Ronaldo during the years the two anchored a team that won four Champions League titles in five seasons.

These totals only capture what's recorded in our match-by-match data, so they understate each pair's true combined output — but they're a real, data-backed look at who creates for whom. You can look up any player's full scoring and assist record using the Quiz and Players tools.
